Best Koi for Beginners
All too often we hear that new hobbyists buy a few inexpensive koi to start off their new pond. “I don’t want to spend a lot, in case they die. “ What they don’t realize is that by taking this approach, more times than not, they are stacking the odds against them from the beginning.
Many of the “cheap” koi are purchased from facilities that are not experienced in koi health. Many times these koi can have parasites on them. These are not the best koi for a beginner. When the koi is stressed by being caught, bagged and introduced to a new environment, if parasites are present, they can take over the koi and if not treated, kill the koi.
For an experienced koi keeper, this may not be a problem, since they understand how to quarantine koi and how to treat parasites, if they appear. But, for a new hobbyist this can be a frustrating experience and cause them to believe they are unable to care for koi.
A new hobbyist should be open to spending a bit more per koi to receive a healthy koi. When a new hobbyist visits our farm, they get to see a large selection of healthy, strong koi. All of our koi are quarantined for parasites before we offer them for sale. This gives our customers the best chance of success with their koi right from the start.
Many of the lower grade koi that are sold may not improve as they grow. Many things that a hobbyist can experience is the color red becoming dappled or disappearing from the koi all together as it ages. This leaves the hobbyist in a bad situation of having a koi that they no longer enjoy in their pond.
By not settling on low grade koi to start off your pond, not only will you be happier when your koi successfully settles into your pond, but as the koi grows and develops, it will give you years of enjoyment.
