Main Event Harvest, Day 3!

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

This morning’s harvest was our Oval Pond.  Only 15 girls in there so they had lots of room to roam!  Still no sunshine, Nor’Easter number two is rolling through.  The koi don’t seem to mind though!  Koi kichi made it out for the harvest, but unfortunately the weather is keeping some people from coming to the harvest.  We are hoping that with tomorrow being the harvest of the 555 pond and the big girls, more people will be willing to brave the weather.  Just wear boots and a jacket with a hood and you’ll be fine :)   It will definitely be worth it!!

Main Event Harvest, Day 2, Acre Pond

Friday, October 16th, 2009

We only had one harvest planned for today since it was the Acre Pond.  The pond is truly the size of an acre!  We only had 34 koi in the pond so they had lots of room this summer.  Just to give you an idea of how massive this pond is, the seine net alone is just under 300 feet long.  It took a team of three people on each side to pull it through the pond.  They managed to get 100% of the koi in just one pull.  On one side, Mat lead the team of Mike Frady and Verne Gilkes, and on the other side Ross led the team of Luke Frisbee and Dave Hicks.  Luckily the rain held off until later in the afternoon.

And Now for the Koi….

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Below are pictures from today’s harvest of Pond 27.  These koi entered into the pond as Nisai (two years old) and were harvested today as Sansai.  The koi that are sold are labeled as such and the koi that are for sale are labeled with their SKU, and will be added to the catalog after Main Event.  The pictures aren’t “glamour shots” but in the rain we have to work quickly :)   Just an interesting side note…60% of these sold koi were purchased in last year’s 555 Event and came back to the mud pond for another season of growth.

Tomorrow, the Acre Pond!

Main Event Harvest, Day 1

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

And so today begins our Main Event Harvest weekend.  At the farm we equate it to Christmas morning…coming down to see all of the wrapped presents sitting under the tree and being so excited to unwrap each present and see what you have been anticipating all season.  You want to rush through it and tear off the paper quickly, but at the same time you want to savor each and every present one at a time.  As Henry mentioned in his Koi-Bito post, it truly would not be a Nisei Koi Farm harvest if we did not have torrential rain and howling winds (and Henry should know as he has been to EVERY harvest since 2003 (possibly 2002???).  So I thought I would start the blog by setting the scene so you can feel like you were there shivering with us.  We had a morning pull and an afternoon pull.

Nisai Mudpond Harvest, Day 4

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Today we harvested a mudpond where the tosai entered as 6-7″ and were harvested at 12-16″.  Another great day, except that Bob had to head back to the Windy City.  We thought we would each share with you our favorite koi from today’s harvest.  Don’t forget to check the catalog today for the new additions!

The Production Crew

Friday, October 9th, 2009

In case you were ever wondering just how the koi “glamour shots” get to your computer screen, it takes a team of highly trained professionals!  Mat and Ross have the easy job…they just seine the pond and bring the koi to our photo booth.  In the photo booth each koi is treated to luxurious accommodations in an 8′ show tank one at a time.  Once in the tank, Mike Frady uses small culling nets attached to longer polls (we call it the chopsticks) to gently guide the koi into proper photo position.  Bob Brudd then works his magic behind the camera to get the best photo possible.  Sometimes we have koi who may not want to cooperate (males!!!), but koi photographing is a game of patience and we wait until the koi is ready to cooperate.  Once Bob gets the shot he hands it over to me, Tara, and I pop it into the laptop to make sure the photo is a keeper; if so, the photo gets processed.  I crop the photo and record all of the information (SKU, variety, size, gender, and price).  Then I hand it off to Jen where she adds the koi into the website catalog.  Each koi that goes out to mud has a running record of all of the information.  This is especially important with Tategoi so that we can track it’s development over time.  We are also tracking how certain genetics develop over time.  This record keeping process keeps us very busy in the office!!

Nisai Mudpond Harvest, Day 3

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

More and more nisai!!  Another great harvest day!  Mike Frady came to join us working on the “chopsticks” (Mickey will know what this means).  We harvested koi that went into the mud in May as 7-8″ and came out today as 14-16″.  We are definitely happy that the koi doubled in size this summer considering the cool and rainy weather, but our goal is to have the koi double in size and add two more inches in the tosai to nisai year.  Below are three more koi in the new nisai growout sale…more details to follow…

We have been updating our catalog daily with the harvested koi.  Now is a great chance to get well-priced quality koi.  Below are some of these koi, which are only $300!   This are just a few Selects, check out our catalog daily to see newly added koi.
