Culling of Sanke
Wednesday, July 14th, 2010Tuesday morning the guys headed out in the rain to bring in the babie Sanke for their first cull

Note: Koi bags doubling as rain gear
The koi came in on avarage of 2 inches. Mat was very happy with the results, but even more pleased with the number of High Class Sanke that came from this spawn. Looking like a good year for Sanke.

More Showa Babies!
Thursday, July 8th, 2010Showa fry are first culled when they are only a few days old. Showa is a black based fish, so the white fry are seperated from the black fry and only the black fry are placed into the mud ponds to be grown.

Showa Fry
Culling showa is a extremely important but very time consuming. We have a small staff, so we are very greatful when our customers graciously offer to help with this task.
This year, it took a few day to get thru all the showa babies. Its very suprising how much growth can happen in the first 24hrs in the mud pond. For best results, we wanted to keep the frys’ size similar in each pond. So, each of the three days of culled fry got their own mud pond. All three mud ponds of showa have come from the same spawning.
Today Mat culled the second pond of showa

The first cull of these showa was done by Joyce Spears, one of our helpful customers, at only a few days old. Joyce seperated thru the white and black fry. Only the black fry are placed in the mud ponds to be grown.
Today was the second cull of the first pond. The koi were brought out at about 3inches. There wasn’t a large number of koi, but the koi were of excellent quality and a few hundred were returned back to the mud pond.
