Update on the 555 Koi

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Just a quick update on the 555 koi. The koi were scheduled to be moved to the mud ponds last Friday.

However, our weather took a turn and we have had days of rain in the high 60′s and night temps dipping into the 50′s.

Mat decided to keep the koi in the greenhouse where they are at 70 degrees and feeding 8 times of day, until the weather changes again.

We will keep everyone posted on when the koi head to mud.

Be assured!! The koi are happy and growing well!

Tomorrow is the DAY – 2011 555Event

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

The 555 event has returned following customer demand. This event is as exciting for us as it is to many koi hobbyists.

Known for our Go Sanke breeding, many people have requested from us High Grade koi in many different varieties. I’m sure this comes with no surprise that achieving this request doesn’t happen over night.

Mat brought more variety to our breeding program and strives to keep the quality of all varieties we produce at the very highest.

Many of you have followed on our blog the journey of  the koi in the 555 event with us, from breeding, summer culling, harvest, winter grow out and the selection of the top 555.

We thank Joyce, Mike and Dave for helping with the 555 event this year. It is a very time consuming task and with your help everything has ran smoothly.

We are anxiously a waiting tomorrow, as people won’t even tell US which koi are their top pick!

Last note: All koi are up and ready for the auction. Please be aware the auction will post from our hosting server and not manually from the farm. You many need to refresh the auction page to see the koi when they become active for auction at 8am. Remember to hit  BIN (buy it now)!

Best of luck to everyone!

555Event – May 5th – 8am.

HERE ARE THE 2011 555 EVENT KOI!!!!

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

This year’s 555 Koi Event is unlike one we have done before. Due to the request from our customers, this year selection is offering more koi variety other then Go Sanke.

Many people have been following our tosai grow out this winter. With the grow out of the koi  very successful, we are offering koi in a larger size range, allowing us to offer more koi  of high quality and not limited by a narrow size range.

The rules of the 555 event:

  1. 55 koi will be offered for sale on May 5th 2011 starting at 8am for $555. Koi will be sold thru our online auction using the “Buy Now” option.
  2. These high class koi are not normally sold by the breeder, but kept to grow on to the next stage. We are offering these top 55 koi for sale for one week, however NO more information than what is supplied about these koi will be offered by any Quality Koi Staff.

This year, Mat has offered a published grading on the 555 koi.

In order to convey what Mat is seeing each time he grades a koi, he has devised a grading system that is used both a tool to remember specific quality attributes and also a pricing scale.

There are up to  7 attributes graded with regard the koi at this grading.  All attributes are graded 1-5 where 5 is the best mark and also the most rare.

Body shape or conformation:  graded with respect to largest ultimate size.

Beni quality  }  red, orange, yellow and gold are graded for thickness and sheen

Sumi quality  }      black qualities are graded for thickness and sheen  No grade is given for black reticulation

Hardness: This is a measure of longevity of beauty in color

Very hard color with razor sharp edges has a mark of 1

Soft color with blurred unclear edges with a long time until completion receives a 5

Pattern : This is marked with 2 considerations.  Conventional ‘show’ patterns receive high marks but also artistic individual koi that appeal to the breeder may also be highly regarded

Gin Rin-   grade based on uniform arrangement of reflective scales

Luster  -  Relating to metallic koi, graded on the intensity of the overall shine
