Here are some individual photos of some of Mat’s favorites from yesturday’s Sanke sorting. They are only some quick shots. James will be taking their “professional” photos today.

The guys sorted thru more sanke today. These sanke were harvested 3-5 inches and measured today at 4-6”. Since they have been harvested these koi have been kept in a greenhouse at 65-70 degree F. They have been on an auto feeder, feeding 4X per day or feeding at 1.5% body weight per day.
All these koi this fall were demend worthy of coming into the greenhouse and not spend the winter in the mud ponds. But, each time we sort thru the koi, the harsher we get. Today these koi were split in 3 ways..koi for our wholesale clients, for our retail clients and the third group will move into our grow out greenhouse. These koi will moved into 78 degree F and fed 12 X a day or 3% their body weight per day.
Mat is very careful with watching the temperature the koi are being moved from and into. If the temperature difference is to great, we can quickly have problems with the koi and with our stocking and feeding rates in the growout greenhouse, a small problem can turn into a big problem very quickly.
Here is a group shot of some very special sanke the Mat is setting aside for an event he is planning soon.

Now that the Ochiba are out of quarantine, it is time for Mat to sort the koi by grade and size.
When the koi were harvested, only the koi with the highest potential came into the greenhouses and the others returned to the mud ponds to spend the winter. It has only been a few weeks from when the koi were harvested, but this first sorting of grade was harsh.
The koi were separated into 3 grades – available to our wholesale clients, available for retail clients and those Mat has chosen to move into our grow out greenhouse for another cycle.
I was able to get some pictures of the koi Mat is moving into the grow out greenhouse. They are just starting the individual pictures of the koi and the record keeping, so some more close up pictures to come.

All the koi that were coming in from the mud ponds are now settled in warm greenhouse and those koi staying in the mud ponds for the winter are cooling down as our temps drop here in NJ.
The quarantine for the tosai koi in the greenhouses is complete and these koi have been placed in our growout greenhouse were they have been feeding heavily on auto feeders for the past few weeks.

Now that all the koi that are in the greenhouses are stable, its time for their first winter sorting. Mat will is going thru all the tosai that have been brought into the greenhouses.

Each koi will be measured to see the growth from harvest time. The koi then will be split 2 ways, for sale or hold for growing (Tategoi).

The tategoi koi will remain in the grow out greenhouse in lesser stocked tanks and on a high feeding regiment.
The koi beginning sorted today are the first harvest back in early September. This sorting process will take us few days to go thru all the koi and record all the new data.
What is exciting about these winter splits are the koi now going into the “Special Tank”. Yep, its holding the canidates for the 2011 May 555 event!
Keep an eye on the blog and our magazine ads to get sneak peeks of potential 555 event koi!
The breeding of our Kikokuryu was on Jun 22nd.

We used to males to breed with her. One a Doitsu Kujaku and the other a Yamabuki Butterfly to add more variety into our butterfly line.

The first cull of the spawn was done Aug 4th. Here a few shots of some babies.

On June 22nd our Gin Rin Showas were breed.
We used a Female Gin Rin Showa bred by the Nisei Koi Farm in 2005

Female Gin Rin Showa
And we used 3 males
The first male was bred by Toshio Sakai of the Matsunosuke blood line. We recieved them in 2008 ship of tosai for us to growout and find future parents from.

The second male used is our #1 Male Magoi Showa, supplied by Toshio Sakai. This koi has “New Sumi” and was used in this breeding to improve the sumi quality with in our Gin Rin Showa

The third of the the males used in this spawning was a Long Fin Kin Matsuba. We introduced him into the spawn to make long fin Gin Rin Kin Showa, along with other varieties.

Outlook from this breeding is to produce large (with the infuence of Magoi) high quality Gin Rin Showa
The first cull was on July 27th 2010

Here are a few more babies from the cull that went back to the mud to grow on

Mat and Jen review pictures of the parents that have given such great results.

Tuesday morning the guys headed out in the rain to bring in the babie Sanke for their first cull

Note: Koi bags doubling as rain gear
The koi came in on avarage of 2 inches. Mat was very happy with the results, but even more pleased with the number of High Class Sanke that came from this spawn. Looking like a good year for Sanke.

This week we did the first cull on the Sanke
The Sanke were bred May 29th 2010
I don’t have much information on the parents Mat choose for this breeding. As you can imagine, he’s pretty busy running around on the farm right now. So here are the pictures of the breeders and i will share more about them when i can get Mat to sit down!

Showa fry are first culled when they are only a few days old. Showa is a black based fish, so the white fry are seperated from the black fry and only the black fry are placed into the mud ponds to be grown.

Showa Fry
Culling showa is a extremely important but very time consuming. We have a small staff, so we are very greatful when our customers graciously offer to help with this task.
This year, it took a few day to get thru all the showa babies. Its very suprising how much growth can happen in the first 24hrs in the mud pond. For best results, we wanted to keep the frys’ size similar in each pond. So, each of the three days of culled fry got their own mud pond. All three mud ponds of showa have come from the same spawning.
Today Mat culled the second pond of showa
