High Class Koi Auction August 13th!

Friday, August 5th, 2011

In the current economy there are fewer and fewer koi hobbyists investing in large and expensive koi.

Growing koi in the mud ponds and housing koi in the greenhouses over winter months is an extraordinary expense and prices many koi out of the current market.

Due to this trend, this season we have decided to send fewer koi back to the mud ponds to grow for another year than we have in past years.

Many of our high class tategoi have been kept in the greenhouses to grow this summer.

We now need to make space in the greenhouses for our upcoming fall koi harvest and will be offering these high class tategoi for sale.

60 lots of koi will be offered for auction on August 13th.

* 30 lots will be sold onsite

* 30 lots will be sold online

These koi have not yet been offered for sale

A variety of ages and sizes of koi will be offered

OPENING BID WILL SET THE RESERVE – ALL KOI MUST GO!

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to purchase high class tategoi!

Onsite – Auction will be held 9am-12pm. Door will be open at 8.30am

Online – Auction will begin August 13th  at 12pm and  end August 14th 12pm

Farm update

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Things here at the farm have been moving pretty quickly the past few weeks. Here is a give a quick update on what has been going on.

Last Thursday, Mat bred 2 more parent sets - Showa and Kohaku. (will get photos posted shortly)

Early this week Mat though the kohaku breeding was not a success when he did not see free swimming fry when he expected to. But, he left the eggs in the hatching tank and luckly we did see fry yesterday and even more today. Mat was happy with the results and moved the fry to the mud ponds this morning. The slow hatching  most likely was  due to the cooler evenings we have had..just another example that patience in Koi farming can pay off.

The Showa on the other hand hatched right on schedule. Joyce,Ammanda and Hannah – Yes, Hannah is put to work this season- are all spending today culling black babies

Other farming – In a  rush against the weather and a broken machine, Mat had no choice but to bring in big machines to get the rest of the mud ponds tilled and rolled..The guys worked LONG days but the job is complete and the ponds are ready to receive the new fry.

Breeding Delayed

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

The heat wave on the East Coast has finally past and brought us some cooler weather.

Although its much more enjoyable to work in, Mat is cautious about this weather change. It is the over night tempertures Mat is keeping his eye on. We currently are are breeding in above ground tanks with a realitivily small volume of water that can change temperture quickly.

Although the actual breeding would more then like take place, the survival of the eggs would be put at risk if the water cools to much over night.

We will try again breeding on Thursday when the temperatures are expected to stablize again.

As a koi breeder, one of my joys is when customers report back regarding the koi they have purchased from us. It’s very rewarding for me to know that we are achieving our goals as American koi Breeders, providing affordable, healthy, high-class koi to our customers that can compete side by side with Japanese koi.

We received exciting news from one of our customers.

Mike Frady and his koi won big at the Greater Louisville Koi and Goldfish show last weekend. Mike took to the show one imported koi he got from Quality Koi Company and 3 koi that were bred here at the farm.

Mike walked away with:

Farm News: It’s Breeding Time!
When they don’t hatch…

Breeding koi is not an exact science.

Although the females in Tuesday’s breeding dropped a lot of eggs, Mat thought from the start that things didn’t look right with the eggs from either female. We continued with the eggs, as there have been times we have had success with the eggs even when conditions weren’t ideal.

However, when neither set showed signs of hatching, Mat decided to call it quits with both sets of eggs. READ MORE ON OUR BLOG.

1 night, 3 spawns

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Last night went well. All three sets of parents had spawned when we arrived in this morning.

The males have been placed back into their pond in the greenhouses and the female will spend the rest of the summer in a mud pond.

Now, we wait  for hatching.

back to breeding

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

No.. there isn’t a mini koi show here at the farm!

Now that the weather has warmed up, the greenhouse are to hot to use forbreed the koi in. We moved the breeding tanks and hatching tanks to the one shady spot on the farm.

To make up for last weeks spawn where we did not have a successful hatching, Mat decided to breed 3 sets of parents this week.

First up is our Kikokuryu – the koi she produced last year have been a big hit this season

This Kikokuryu was bred here on the farm in 2007

The final female of the week is our Ai Goromo bred in 2006

We used this female last year, but she did not produce many eggs. Similar to last week, Mat had to make the decision that with such a low hatch rate of her eggs he couldn’t dedicate a mud pond to her and did not raise the small number of fry that hatched.

Being a year older and looking like she is carrying a large number of eggs, we are hoping for good results from her this year.

When they don’t hatch…

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Breeding koi is not an exact science.

All though the females in Tuesday’s breeding dropped a lot of eggs, Mat thought from the start that things didn’t look right with the eggs from either female. We continued with the eggs, as there have been times we have had success with the eggs even when conditions weren’t ideal.

However, with neither set showed signs of hatching, Mat decided today to call it quits today with both sets of eggs.

A breeder could drive themselves crazy questioning why a breeding didn’t work. Was it the mini heat wave we are experiencing….was water quality off…was it because it was the first breeding of the female…no way to get the answer

All we can do is clean up and set up for the next female in line for breeding.

Next week it all starts again…

Next up…

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

The fry have been moved out to the mud ponds and the next breeding sets have been placed together.
