The first male was bred by Toshio Sakai of the Matsunosuke blood line. We recieved them in 2008 ship of tosai for us to growout and find future parents from.

The third of the the males used in this spawning was a Long Fin Kin Matsuba. We introduced him into the spawn to make long fin Gin Rin Kin Showa, along with other varieties.

There is a job for everyone

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Things have be very busy here at the farm since spring broke and we have had to use all the hands we have!

Our Hannah, while on spring break this week,  got to spend her time helping at the farm. Feeding fish, assisting in packing koi and even some filing.

Here Hannah is helping select the worms that are being fed to our females to get them ready for breeding.

Harvest Comes to a Close

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Well, harvest is over.  For the NKF staff, harvest began about two months ago with the tosai and nisai, which came at the end of a long and grueling breeding/growing/culling season.  Now the focus shifts to maintaining filtration and water quality in all of the greenhouses, and beginning our two month long quarantine process.  All of the Tategoi will be assessed and plans for who will be going to which mudpond begins.  Then we figure out which ponds will be used for breeding, which ones for growing, and potentially which breeding pairs will be spawned.  The harvest – breeding cycle is always in motion.

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and came out to join us for Main Event!  We feel so very fortunate to have customers and friends who travel from as far as Canada, Florida, Illinois to be a part of harvest.  We especially want to thank our volunteers who were such a critical part of harvest…from landscaping to photography to milk runs to home cooked meals, thank you for all of your help…Steve Wernlund, Mike Frady, Verne Gilkes, Luke Frisbee, Dave Hicks, Mickey Stonepainter, Bob Brudd, Kavent and Dinah Bwint, Henry Culpepper, and Joyce Spears.

Some of our favorite moments from harvest…

Another Mud Pond Harvest!

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

This afternoon we harvested another one of our experimental spawns from late August 2008.  We used a female Matsunosuke Aka Matsuba with two new male Matsunosuke Goshiki, one being Gin Rin.  With the experimental spawns, not only are we looking for koi that we will sell but we are also looking to make potential parent koi.  The results of this spawning were quite interesting!  Below are a few koi that really caught our eye…
