Quality Koi Company Live Koi Shipping Procedure

We here at Quality Koi Company think the shipping of our koi is as important as all of the other expert care we give to the koi up to the time of shipping. We put extreme efforts in producing quality fish and providing our customers with healthy, strong koi. We follow thru our high standards of fish care with our shipping procedure.

To be sure the koi travels in the best condition, we stop the koi's feeding 3-5 days prior to shipping. This helps clear out their digestive track prior to making their trip. This clearing of their systems cuts down on the solid waste the koi and the ammonia extracted from the gills put off during transit.

To help protect the koi from remaining waste put off during transit, we use a product called ULTIMATE. Ultimate is a water conditioner that does the following.

  • Removes & Detoxifies Chlorine
  • Removes and Detoxifies Ammonia
  • Destroys Chloramines
  • Detoxifies Copper and Heavy Metals
  • Boosts Alkalinity
  • Adds Essential Electrolytes
  • Adds 3-part skin slime replacer
  • Reduces stress and instantly "Ages" Water

The koi are shipped in strong insulated boxes. This insulation helps control the water temperature for the koi, but it also gives an extra layer of protection to our shipping box. This extra protection helps cut done on damage thru bumps and dings to the shipping box. The boxes in which we ship our live koi are well marked with "LIVE FISH" stickers to alert the carrier that there are live fish in the box.

Transporting larger live koi (fish)

When shipping our larger koi, 18 inches plus, we ship them via airlines. We ship out of our local airport, Philadelphia International Airport, to the customers nearest cargo airport. This method of shipping the koi, in most cases, gets the koi to the customer and into their pond in less than 24 hours.

Transporting smaller live koi (fish) via USPS

With efforts to lower shipping costs to our customers, we recently began shipping with the United States Postal Service (USPS). Although this method of shipping may take a full 24 to 48 hours, the koi are delivered to the customer's doorstep. Live koi (fish) being shipped using this method are our smaller koi - under 18 inches. We limit the size of koi so that the shipping box is easily handled by the post office.

Both of our methods of shipping insure the live koi during the shipment. If the koi happen to arrive dead, the customer may claim the value of their koi through the carrier. Although these occurrences are rare, when it does happen the customer is covered.

We understand that the koi that has been selected is the koi the customer wants to receive. We make every effort to ensure the koi arrives in the best possible condition.
