Rare Koi

In these times of a tight economy the koi hobbyist doesn't need to sacrifice the quality of koi they put in their pond.

The Nisei Koi Farm is a specialized koi farm that focuses on producing and supplying high quality koi to the koi enthusiast. We breed high grade parent koi imported from top koi breeders in Japan, namely Mr. Toshio Sakai of the champion Matsunosuke blood line.

With our breeding practice of pairing parent koi for their special genetic traits and our intensive culling, we are able to produce some of the highest grade koi in the United States. In spring we start with approximately 250,000 fry on the farm and cull these koi down to 200 - 400 rare koi that meet our high standards. Over the next few years, this group of rare koi is eventually culled down to the top 5 koi as they enter their 5th and 6th year of growing here in the mud ponds.

Many hobbyists come to our farm to find these rare koi fish that are hard to find here in the United States. One of our most popular varieties produced on the farm is Showa. The Showa that are bred on our farm are the first American Bred Showa to have atarashi sumi. This new type of sumi is a deeper, shinier black, than is normally found on Showa. This year we will have many rare koi varieties available.

We are able to offer some customers a rare koi experience of growing their koi here in the mud ponds on our farm. These selected koi are very high quality females and the potential results of growth and development in fall when the koi are harvested is worth the extra investment by the owner to use our mud pond for a summer growing season.

Since we are producing these high quality koi here in the United States, the additional costs of shipping and import fees are eliminated from the cost of our koi, allowing us to offer our customers the opportunity to purchase these rare koi fish at an affordable price.
